Phillip E. boat’s passion for vintage boat racing runs deep in his family’s history. He inherited Jinx, a racing boat raced by his father and uncle back in the 1960s. Phillip is in the process of restoring the boat but had one problem: the carburettor needed replacement. Jinx was built in the 1950s as an outboard boat and Phillip’s uncle bought it in 1960 in Tasmania, Australia. Phillip’s dad and uncle put a Renault 750 (Renault 4CV) engine in it, and later an 850 engine (Renault Dauphine). They named their boat Jinx and then raced it in the 1960s. After over 60 years in the family and holding great sentimental value, the boat is now in Phillip’s hand. He is restoring it and looking forward to seeing it roaring on the water again soon.
After so many years of being raced and exposed to the elements, the original Solex F28 IBT carburettor became unusable. No replacements were available in Australia. This is when Phillip reached out to The Knowledgeable Frenchman Ltd, in the hope we could source, restore and deliver a vintage carburettor for Jinx. And of course, we took on the challenge to help preserve Phillip’s family legacy by providing a genuine Solex F28 IBT to Jinx.

We then fully dismantled the carburettor, cleaned and inspected each component, and replaced any worn-out parts. Once rebuilt, we pre-tuned the Solex F28 IBT to ensure that it would function seamlessly on the Renault 850 engine installed on Jinx the racing boat.
Once ready, we delivered the restored Solex F28 IBT carburettor to Phillip in Australia.
