Hello everyone, and welcome here.
We are tackling the restoration of an off-side front wing fitted at least 30 years ago on the MGB GT 1975, and using it to illustrate how we can support our customers to bring their ideas to life.
Context
This mini-project started on the 23/06/2020, with the initial objectives and requirements listed below:
- a full restoration of the wing and ancillaries (chrome trim, headlight, etc), including paint job (hand paint, not sprayed), and with the requirement of reusing as much as possible the old parts
- 15 business days maximum
- overall cost not exceeding the maximum envelope and to be kept as minimum as possible
- no shortcut regarding quality
There are several stages in this mini-project. The 3 main ones are project launch or initialisation, project realisation and project commissioning.
Project launch
From the initial quote, we need to confirm that the initial targets (time, cost and quality) are still valid for our project or if it needs to be thought differently.
First thing is to depose the front wing, completed without major issues. Follow the inspection of the wing and parts:
At this point, we can confirm our initial quote, considering the results from inspection:
- the wing by itself is in good shape, only surface rust is expected under the rubberized coating,
- the headlamp unit on its own is in good shape,
- chrome trims (wing and headlamp) are also in good condition,
- the headlamp bowl needs replacement; it cannot be rescued,
- a new fitting kit for the wing chrome trim is needed,
- a new fitting kit for the wing onto the body is also needed
The timeframe is also confirmed, and mainly driven by the drying time between coatings:
- Dismantling and wing preparation: 2 to 3 days,
- Rust treatment and painting: 9 to 10 days,
- Reinstallation of the wing on the car, and fitting headlamp and chrome trims: 2 days.
The tasks are organised as follow (some tasks have progressed already by the time of publication).
From there, and once validated (usually by the customer), we can proceed to the execution phase (project realisation), that will be described in a second post about this restoration of an off-side front wing fitted on the MGB GT 1975.
